When Albert Einstein was five years old, his father gave him a magnetic pocket compass to play with while he was sick in bed. That simple act changed Einstein’s life forever. Even as an old man, Einstein wrote of this compass with its needle always, mysteriously turning to the north, “I can still remember...that this experience made a deep and lasting impression on me. Something deeply hidden had to be behind things”… “Young as I was, the remembrance of this occurrence never left me.”
It is not uncommon for scientists and engineers to continue to pursue in their adult lives themes and curiosity that started in their childhood. We want to celebrate the 100 years since Einstein proposed his fundamental theory of gravity with a compass for our kids.
Over the next few months, we will distribute little button compasses to students along with several activities concerning compasses and magnetism.
Let the little Einstein inside you go free and chase knowledge and curiosity!
